What is a vasectomy reversal?

Vasectomy reversal is a procedure to restore fertility in men that have had a vasectomy.

It involves rejoining the ends of the vas deferens, the tube which was cut during vasectomy. The vas deferens carries sperm from the testicles to the prostate where it is mixed with semen.

What does a vasectomy reversal involve?

Vasectomy reversal involves rejoining the cut ends of the vas deferens on both sides of the scrotum using a surgical microscope or the daVinci robotic surgical platform for magnification.

If it is not possible to re-join the ends of the vas deferens, it may be possible to join the vas deferens directly to the epididymis (the sac on the back of the testicle which stores sperm).

The procedure is performed through an incision in the scrotum.

Vasectomy reversal is performed under general anaesthetic.

What is the recovery after a vasectomy reversal?

Vasectomy reversal is usually performed as day surgery – you can go home on the day of the procedure.

Recovery from surgery on the scrotum can be quite slow. You will have mild to moderate pain and swelling in your scrotum for a few weeks to months after the procedure. This can usually be managed with over the counter pain relief.

You can usually return to normal activities, including work, three to five days after a vasectomy reversal, but you need to avoid vigorous physical activity for two to four weeks.

How successful is vasectomy reversal?

The chance of vasectomy reversal being successful can be up to 80%, but it depends on how long it has been since you had a vasectomy.

You can’t ejaculate for one week after vasectomy reversal. After one week, you can resume sexual activity if you feel comfortable.

It can take three to six months for sperm to appear in your semen after vasectomy reversal. A semen test is performed around three months after the procedure to look for sperm in your ejaculate.

Vasectomy reversal does not change your libido (sex drive), erections, testosterone levels, or the amount you ejaculate when you orgasm.
